Can Tantra Make it in the Modern World?
First let’s see just what Tantra is. It is a very, very old eastern religion, many centuries before Christ. The beginnings may have had some dark sides it evolved into a gentle, sharing caring earth religion. An earth religion is one that celebrates and worships the earth, the seasons, the crops and the harvest. A religion that is in harmony with nature. Wicca is another earth religion that has survived for many thousands of years.
I might as well tell you now that I am against any form of organized religion. I have spent my time behind the pulpit and what I’ve learned is that people don’t practice what they preach and don’t preach what the practice. Organized religion has become more organization and less religion.
I’m getting off the subject and on my soapbox. Getting back to the issue, since Tantra, Wicca and the other earth religions were here centuries before Christ it is understandable that the teachings of Christ would not be part of it. That doesn’t mean that once Christ came along that his teachings could not now be a part of the religion.
Since you have two choices, pagan or Christian, I guess I am pagan. I think of myself as a pagan Christian. The earth religions can be summed up in the Wiccan creed, “An it harm none do as you will.” To me that is not much different that Christ saying, “Love one another as I have loved you.”
If you believe one you almost have to believe the other, so both can be in harmony with each other. Now let’s look at the differences. In the country we have separation of church and state. That is nothing more than a false sense of security. Centuries before our country was founded the church form the government and the government created the church.
The biggest differences in the old ways and the modern church are sex and control. They both accept that the sex drive is the most forceful drive in the makeup on mankind, but they use it differently. The modern church uses this to control its population. They tell you who you can have sex with, who not to have sex with. They tell you how, when and where you can have sex and when not to.
Tantra is 180 degrees the other way. We accept man as a sexual being and use this sexual engery as a way to commune with the Gods. Sex is a very powerful force and we will get into the different celebrations in later post. It is a way to see and accept the God/Goddess in each of us. Even if we don’t like that person or our partner at the moment we can still see and accept the good in them. It is a way to get in tune with the universe, to be in harmony with nature: or to put it so the new kids will understand it, “to have the force within us”.

2[...] Tantra provides a pathway out of this, by bringing awareness and reverence to the experience of pleasure, by making a study of what truly empowers us to feel the vibration of life within us and around us, and by following that pathway, even if we’re a little frightened, we can create conditions for functioning with more autonomy. We may never totally free ourselves from the cultural constructs that help make us who we are, but if we bring awareness to our actions, recognize those constructs as nothing more than constructs and commit ourselves to pleasure, deliberately and consciously, we can begin to find ways to get off the wheel. 9[...] Tantra is a loose term assigned to practices characterized by ritual, rites of passage, energy work, and the utilization of the mundane to reach the supramundane and understanding the relationship between the micro and macrocosm. These aspects of Tantra can be spiritual and/or material. A guru is often consulted to help the practitioner have a mystical experience and properly guide them through the associated rituals. [...]
